Virus that has acquired an immune system?!!?? Le gasp.

I’m sure you’ve seen this  posted over and over again, but this is the first article that I ran across that actually lists genes and proteins.

The virus in question is actually known as ICP1 and is a bacteriophage (a virus that infects bacteria.) This particular “phage” attacks Virbrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera. The virus acquired a gene, which we know produces a protein, that allows it to quickly infect and ultimately kill the bacterium (the phage lyses the cell).  This finding is a pretty big deal for quite a few reasons: 1) it reignites the argument that viruses are more than just nucleic acid and a protein and should be considered as more than that. 2) the search for other viruses that have also pulled off this magnificent feat 3) this virus could possibly be used as therapy against V. cholera. and so forth.

So for a more detailed description and also the name of the protein ;-) ,

I suck..

Sorry for the always prolonged hiatus.. I’m back and will make sure to post as much as possible. With that being said, I will also post  links  to articles that I find mind-blowingly-amazing.

Matricide

Matr/i/cid/e

Matr = mother (from the Latin word Mater which means mother. In Latin, words are declined, meaning that when they are used in a certain way they have a different form. When it’s in its ablative form the word mater is seen as matre. [Also notice the similarity to the spanish word for mother, madre.] Hence where the matr come from. Apologies for the small novel.)

cid= to kill.

*murder of a mother by her son or daughter

The Birth of Athena

Zeus, as you will find out, is quite the harlot. Back in the day the most powerful god was the one that sired the most. Zeus was the head god of many gods (this type of religion is called henotheism) thus he sired the most. Going throughout Greek mythology you will find that he has many children from many different woman; which helps to explain why Hera can be such a….. mean lady. Anyway, Zeus copulated with Metis, a  Titan whose name means thought.  Ge (aka Gaea), grandmother of Zeus, warned him Metis was destined to give birth to a child that would be greater than Zeus himself.

Zeus naturally didn’t like this so he went to Metis and swallowed her whole. One day Zeus was suffering from quite the headache. Hephaestus decided he would take an ax to Zeus’ head to end his headache. When he did, out sprang full grown Athena dressed in full armor with a spear. On this day, Zeus’ favorite child was born. Athena is the goddess of strategic war, knowledge and other things. She is often also referred to as Pallas Athena. Athena has gray eyes and blonde golden hair. Owls and olive branches often symbolize Athena.

Parasites—Naegleria fowleri

I must apologize… I have been so busy that I have neglected this for far too long. Again, I apologize. With that being said, I would like to cover a parasite that has been getting a lot of coverage in the news, Naegleria fowleri (a.k.a. the brain eating amoeba).

Naegleria folweri is an amoeba (a unicellular organism). Amoebas are protozoans.

Naegleria fowleri is a free-living amoeba.This means that they do not need to infect the human body, or any other animal to continue its life cycle. Thus Naegleria fowleri is an opportunist, taking hold of the opportunity at hand to infect. N. fowleri lives in water, such as ponds, rivers, and so forth. It resides in high temperatures (often in temperatures higher than 25 degrees C).   N. folweri’s life cycles has three stages: a cyst, a trophozoite, and a biflagellated trophozoite.

The stage we want to pay attention to is the trophozoite; the trophozoite is the infective stage for humans. This pathogen enters the body through the nose. This often happens when diving into the water, or  when one roughly submerges into the water..though at the end of the day, it just consists of the trophozoite getting up your nose somehow. I have taken an excellent explnation from WHO (http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/bathing/recreadischap5.pdf) :

“Amoebae enter the nasal mucosa, cribriform plate and

olfactory bulbs of the brain. The amoebae then spread to other regions of the

brain where they cause inflammation and destruction of the brain tissue and

penetrate the central nervous system. Water is the only known source of

infection (WHO 2004a).”

The amoeba then begins to feed on the brain cells; which generally results in PAM (Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis). As you can imagine this is a very serious problem. Yet again, I find myself using WHO’s (http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/bathing/recreadischap5.pdf) large list of symptoms :

“Onset of PAM is abrupt, with rapidly progressive headaches, fever, nausea,

vomiting, pharyngitis and nasal obstruction or discharge (Martinez 1993).

Convulsions may occur together with lethargy, confusion and a stiff neck.

Eventually the patient falls into a coma and death usually occurs within 1 to 14

days. Other symptoms include abnormalities of taste and smell; seizures;

cerebellar ataxia; nuchal rigidity; photophobia; palsies of the third, fourth and

sixth cranial nerves; and increased intracranial pressure. Cardiac abnormalities

may also occur. “

PAM is very fatal, only two people have been known to have survived ( I am checking that fact). This resulted from the doctors catching it early on in the game and throwing a cocktail mix at the infected.

PAM is a very serious disease, thankfully though the likelihood of this occurring is minimal, however; please bare in mind that though the risk is minimal, it still has happened to people. So be careful out there!!

Side note: Though we hear that the most common way of entry is via a large body of water , there has been a case of infection that did not come from swimming/diving/ or playing in a large body of water. This one case happened when a young man from Louisiana used a neti pot filled with tap water. Unfortunately, the tap water was infected with N. fowleri.

—-That concludes my post on N. fowleri. This post will more than likely change as I find myself remembering more details(that I can support with evidence). So more info will more than likely be added to this page in a few days.—-

Disclaimer: all the information that I post comes straight from my memory. I then make sure it is correct by checking my notes (which come from Ph.D possessing teachers), my text books, and as you can tell very serious websites, such as WHO, the CDC, and so forth.

A basic cover of cells

Before we get too deep into the marvelous world that is biology one must understand some very important concepts. Today’s topic will be cells.

A cell is the most basic unit of any organism.  There are two types of cells eukaryotic and prokaryotic. Today we will focus on eukaryotic; however, when we talk about bacteria we will then cover prokaryotes.

Now there is a lot more in the cell than I am covering and there is a lot more detail too but I just want you to get a small understanding of the cell until we jump head first into different biology topics.

All cells share certain attributes such as: possessing a plasma membrane; having cystol which is a semifluid in which one can find organelles and other components in; all cells have chromosome which contain our genes that are encoded by DNA; and last but not least ribosomes which translate mRNA into proteins. If you are lost please do not panic I will explain nearly everything that was covered in paragraphs to come.

A plasma membrane is a selective barrier that allows passage of certain things in and out of the cell such as: nutrients, waste, and oxygen.

The nucleus contains the DNA which is packaged into chromosomes.

DNA is the genetic information. It is where all genes are encoded for example in your DNA is a set of genes that encodes for your eye color.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)  has two regions: a rough and a smooth. The smooth does not have ribosomes bound to its membrane where  as rough does. Proteins made by bound ribsomes move into the rough ER and then into the smooth ER which sounds them to the golgi apparatus via vesicles.

Vesicles- membrane bound sacs that are used for transport and storage of materials.

Golgi apparatus – receives vesicles and the material within it and then modifies it and sends them off again to their desired place.

Mitochondria- supplies the cell with energy.

Cell wall- plants and fungi posses this; it is a tough outer wall that protects the cell.

Cytoskeleton gives cell support and helps it to maintain its shape.

Again there is much more to the cell but this is just a simplified version for now as to not overwhelm you.

Terminology (Biology/Language)

This post is about bases, prefixes, and suffixes. With the knowledge of this you can dissect words and figure out a rough meaning of the word without a dictionary. Of course there will be many posts like this to further your knowledge of these bases, prefixes and suffixes.

Hepatitis

Hepat/itis

Hepat = liver

Itis= inflammation of

*Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver.

                * denotes the definition of the word

Rhinorrhea

Rhin/o/rrhea

Rhin = nose

Rrhea = discharge

O is just a separator of words.

*Simply put a runny nose

Diarrhea

Dia/rrhea

Dia- through

Rrhea- discharge

*This does not need a definition

Amphibious

Amphi/bi/ous

Amphi- both/ on both sides

Bi-life

Ous- full of

*relating to or adapted for both land and water

Android

Andr/oid

Andr- man

Oid- having the shape of/ like

*An android is a robot or synthetic organism designed to look and act like a human. (This definition was taken from google. Note how it is technically wrong. Andr means man not human so it would be a robot designed to act and look like a human man! )

Aphrodite (Mythology)

Many people will tell you that Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus; that is not necessarily true…

In the beginning there was chaos (in Greek literally void/nothing) and out of chaos came five beings: Ge, Tartarus, Eros, Night, and Erebus. Ge (goddess of earth/ earth) then preceded to give birth to the heavens, the mountains and the sea. Around the begging of time it was believed that woman gave birth to children and men had nothing to do with it. This view, however, changed once men recognized a trend in sex and birth. Thus the story had to change slightly in order for Ge to have anymore children. She had to be impregnated by a “man”. Since heaven was above her it became the “man”. Her son became her husband.

Uranus (or Ouranos) is “the heavens”. Uranus and Ge would make love and Ge would give birth to children; however, Uranus thought his children were ugly so he shoved them back into Ge (the earth). **Now that we’ve covered the “boring stuff” we’re off to the juicy stuff!**

As Uranus continued to shove children back into Ge she began to hurt. Ge cried out to her children but none would stand up to Uranus. Cronus finally said he would help his mother.

Ge forges a sickle and gives it to Cronus. Cronus then waited for his father to come back to get him some. When Cronus saw his father approaching he sneaked up behind him and!

Grabbed Uranus by his testicles and chopped them off with the sickle given to him by Ge. He then threw his fathers testicles into the ocean. The ocean began to foam and out came the goddess Aphrodite! Her name means “out of foam”

So here we have the goddess of love/sexuality…from Uranus’ testicles.

Uranus being castrated was defeated and thus his son took his place.

Isn’t mythology interesting??!??
