Aphrodite (Mythology)

Many people will tell you that Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus; that is not necessarily true…

In the beginning there was chaos (in Greek literally void/nothing) and out of chaos came five beings: Ge, Tartarus, Eros, Night, and Erebus. Ge (goddess of earth/ earth) then preceded to give birth to the heavens, the mountains and the sea. Around the begging of time it was believed that woman gave birth to children and men had nothing to do with it. This view, however, changed once men recognized a trend in sex and birth. Thus the story had to change slightly in order for Ge to have anymore children. She had to be impregnated by a “man”. Since heaven was above her it became the “man”. Her son became her husband.

Uranus (or Ouranos) is “the heavens”. Uranus and Ge would make love and Ge would give birth to children; however, Uranus thought his children were ugly so he shoved them back into Ge (the earth). **Now that we’ve covered the “boring stuff” we’re off to the juicy stuff!**

As Uranus continued to shove children back into Ge she began to hurt. Ge cried out to her children but none would stand up to Uranus. Cronus finally said he would help his mother.

Ge forges a sickle and gives it to Cronus. Cronus then waited for his father to come back to get him some. When Cronus saw his father approaching he sneaked up behind him and!

Grabbed Uranus by his testicles and chopped them off with the sickle given to him by Ge. He then threw his fathers testicles into the ocean. The ocean began to foam and out came the goddess Aphrodite! Her name means “out of foam”

So here we have the goddess of love/sexuality…from Uranus’ testicles.

Uranus being castrated was defeated and thus his son took his place.

Isn’t mythology interesting??!??

Comments? Questions? Snide Remarks?

**If you’re curious as to why it was later said the Aphrodite was Zeus’ daughter then just “ask away”**
